The Agricultural Employers’ Association (AEA) conducted a two-day training on Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) in the Workplace on 17th and 18th September 2026 at Hylise Hotel, Naivasha ,conducted by Ms.Jennifer Wachira-Head of Legal & IR Services-AEA and Dr. Joseph Kibugu, Regional Head of Africa and Middle East of the Business and Human Rights resource centre who offered a special free service to the attendees on support of conducting HRDD at the workplace.The training brought together workplace practitioners to enhance their understanding of human rights responsibilities and strengthen ethical and compliant workplace practices.The training provided participants with an understanding of Human Rights Due Diligence and its importance in the workplace. Discussions focused on how organizations can identify, prevent, mitigate and account for their impacts on human rights, while promoting a workplace culture that respects human rights and supports responsible business practices.
Participants explored key human rights standards and frameworks applicable to workplaces, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, the Constitution of Kenya 2010, the Employment Act 2007, the Labour Relations Act, and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). The sessions also highlighted the importance of compliance and the potential legal, reputational and financial consequences of non-compliance.
The training further addressed human rights risks in the Kenyan workplace, including discrimination, forced labour, child labour, unsafe working conditions and gender-based violence. Participants were introduced to practical methods of identifying and assessing these risks through workplace audits, employee surveys, risk assessments, stakeholder engagement and exit interviews.
The training was delivered through interactive learning, practical exercises, case studies and group discussions, allowing participants to engage with the topics and relate them to workplace situations.
Through the training, AEA continued to support employers and workplace practitioners in strengthening knowledge and practices around human rights, compliance, accountability and ethical conduct. The programme underscored the importance of creating workplaces where human rights are respected, risks are proactively addressed and employees have effective channels for raising and resolving workplace concerns.
