WORKSHOP/ESTATE MANAGER

Agricultural Employers Association commonly known as AEA was started in 1962 and registered in 1966 under the Trade Union’s Act Cap 233 as an Association representing the collective interests of employers in the Agricultural industry in matters connected with Employment of Labour. It is    affiliated to KEPSA, KAM and ASNET.

 

Our client seeks to fill the following vacancy that has arisen in their company:

Vacancy: WORKSHOP/ESTATE MANAGER

The successful candidate will report to the General Manager and will be responsible for all workshop, construction, and other engineering operations on the farm with a view to efficiently supporting all aspects of arable and floriculture production systems. To also be responsible for overall farm estate management, including road maintenance, buildings, fencing, grounds, and water reticulation.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Manage the farm’s workshop, ensuring it is able to service the needs of all areas of production on the farm, and take responsibility for the maintenance of all vehicles, tractors, machinery, and other equipment on the farm.
  2. Ensure plant, machinery, and vehicles are maintained in good/safe working order and are serviced as required.
  3. Monitor replacement requirements, vehicle and machinery performance, and fuel efficiency.
  4. Allocate vehicles and tractors on a daily basis as required, and manage vehicle tracking systems.
  5. Cost and allocate all workshop time and resources.
  6. Oversee all mechanical engineering on the farm, including machining, welding fabrication, and the repair and maintenance of all metal works.
  7. Take responsibility for the maintenance and management of the workshops and main yard, manage fuel stocks, maintain the farm generators, and monitor electricity / solar PV usage.
  8. Manage and maintain all equipment, buildings, and grounds associated with workshop operations.
  9. Maintain workshop tools and machinery, and manage stocks of spare parts and engineering materials.
  10. Prepare purchase orders for workshop supplies, for signature by the General Manager, having investigated suppliers and prices.
  11. Supervise construction projects, including developing drawings, estimates, and tenders where necessary. Make primary use of contract craftsmen and labour. Let contracts, supervise contractors on site, and arrange for the General Manager to authorise payments. Ensure construction is in keeping with Company’s building style and standards.
  12. Supervise maintenance across the farm estate, including all buildings, fencing, grounds, the airstrip, roads, ditches/drains, culverts, water reticulation, tanks, and pumps
  13. Oversee waste disposal / recycling arrangements, review potential energy efficiency enhancements, and supervise the maintenance of Company’s solar PV arrays.
  14. Supervise the maintenance of workforce camp housing and senior staff housing.
  15. Maintain direct responsibility for all workforce assigned to workshop and estate operations, ensuring productivity, and assisting the HR Officer in meeting employee management standards. Supervise work programmes, assign employees’ responsibilities, and record attendance. Through the HR Officer, manage appointments, discipline, leave, overtime, retirements, and terminations as necessary.
  16. Take primary responsibility for health and safety issues, working closely with the HSE Officer to ensure safe working practices are maintained and statutory H&S standards are adhered to.
  17. Ensure the workshop maintains fire-fighting readiness.
  18. Assist the General Manager – Farm with other aspects of his responsibilities for arable production operations as required.
  19. Any other duties as assigned by the General Manager or MD

 

Minimum Qualifications

 The job applicant must possess:

  • Either a degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related field as a commensurate qualification with demonstrable experience and an apprenticeship as minimum;
  • 5 years’ experience as manager in charge of an automotive workshop or farm workshop;
  • Knowledge in automotive systems, mechanical issues, warranties, service, licensing and general repairs;
  • Knowledge in tractors, general farm equipment and commercial diesel;
  • Ability in agricultural engineering and fabrication, simple Estate based building repairs and maintenance to include a fully budgeted maintenance schedule;
  • Organization ability with financial literacy and computer skills including CAD;
  • Detail oriented;
  • Technically competent with ability to train others.
